JANET BOTES
So... where to start? I could probably start by saying that I am creative. Because that's what it all comes down to...
I am easygoing, open-minded, enthusiastic and what you could call "environmentally aware", eco-friendly or an eco-hippie. I grew up in Vanderbijlpark, where I studied Graphic Design at the Vaal University of Technology for 4 years, attaining my B Tech qualification with a well-worked-for cum laude, as well as an award or two. During my Post-graduate studies I focused on green design and the impact it could have on public environmental awareness. After this, I left for the big city and worked in Johannesburg at The Adfactory. Here I was introduced to all the ins and outs of a design company, and learned a great deal from Lara Walters and Grant Fietze. From Jozi, I moved on towards Pretoria with its hills and mountains - and after a short employment at Profit Creative, I started working at "it's called advertising". We did all the design and advertising for Word4word Marketing who, in turn, does the marketing for several national shopping centres. After thus obtaining an understanding of the workings of consumer-enticing design, and a good knowledge of corporate design, I again moved unto greener fields. This time, to apply my skills in freelance graphic design and illustration - while also giving expression to my passion for Fine Art. And from this followed a move to Cape Town with its fresh sea air, rainy weather and amazing natural beauty.
Where I now find myself, I have exposed myself to a diverse set of surroundings, opportunities, situations and challenges in a relatively short amount of time. This diversity is reflected in my work, which includes (but not limited to):
I believe that every creative problem has its own unique, and sometimes unconventional, solution. The challenge, and also the fun, is to get to that solution in a way that everyone benefits from it. I am involved in - and commited to - the creative process, from where I get gratification and motivation to push myself just a little bit more.
